Silverstone and the British Grand Prix – a case study

Where is Silverstone?

Silverstone is a village in Northamptonshire with a population of fewer than 3000 inhabitants. However, once a year, this small village welcomes the British Grand Prix at the nearby racing circuit just 1km away, named to honour the inhabitants, many of whom worked at the circuit in the early days.  

The 1950 British Grand Prix

The 1950 British Grand Prix saw 21 drivers taking part, including a Thai prince and a Swiss baron, and welcomed up to 120,000 spectators, including King George VI. The race took place in May, and the average age of the drivers was 39. The race was won by Giuseppe Farina, a 44 year old Italian from Turin.

The 2022 British Grand Prix

By comparison, the 2022 event took place over 3 days in July and was won by Carlos Sainz, 27, from Spain. 20 drivers took part, with an average age of 27, and the venue was host to in excess of 400,000 visitors.  

With many spectators arriving up to 5 days ahead of the main race, it is vital to ensure there are adequate facilities in place.
