How many portable toilets do you need for an office refurbishment?

10 May 2022

Your office is being refurbished and you need to hire portable toilet facilities for the duration of the works. We explain what your legal obligations are to your workforce and to your builders.

When considering portable toilet hire while your workplace undergoes refurbishment or building work, what do you need to do? Here, we answer the most frequently asked questions.

What are the requirements for toilet provision for staff?

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidelines state that employers must provide ‘adequate and appropriate welfare facilities’ for staff, where ‘facilities’ refer to washing and toilet provision and the term ‘adequate’ relates to the number and quality of the facilities provided.

How many toilets should a workplace have?

The minimum number of toilets required depends on the gender split as follows:

In addition to the above recommendations, due consideration must also be given to disabled people.

While compliance with HSE guidelines is required, thought should also be given to the welfare of staff during what can be an unsettling time, involving disruption and a change of routines. At Fortis Hire, our luxury portable toilet trailer hire ensures you will operate within guidelines while also showing your workforce how highly you are prioritising their wellbeing.

We supply individual luxury toilet units to cater for any size of workforce up to 450 people. For smaller businesses, our Luxury 1 Plus 1 Toilet has two individual and lockable cubicles, with two washbasins, while our Luxury 6 Bay Toilet unit features six gender neutral toilets to cater for up to 300 people. We also have units that can be easily transformed into single gender units; the Luxury 4 Plus 2 Toilet can be converted into a males only unit and the Luxury 8 Bay Toilet can be used as a standalone male unit or a standalone female unit. Alternatively for male dominated workplaces, we offer Luxury Portable Urinal Hire with one unit servicing up to 24 males.

For disabled members of staff or visitors, the Luxury Disabled Toilet has a ramp, handrails, reduced-height sink and mirror as well as plenty of room for wheelchair users to negotiate comfortably.

In line with HSE guidelines, all our units are provided with luxurious hand soap and moisturisers, plus hand towels and toilet paper. All are well lit and have hot and cold running water, while the urinal unit is supplied with hand sanitising stations.

Do I have to provide toilets for the builders?

While your offices are being refurbished and can be construed as a construction site, toilet facilities must be provided at a ratio of one toilet per 7 workers operating across a 40-hour week. Our standard portable toilet hire units fulfill all HSE requirements and we also supply a 6 Man Plastic Urinal perfect for construction workers.

If you are responsible for the provision of temporary toilet facilities during upcoming construction work at your offices, our staff is available to answer any questions you might have to ensure your compliance with the HSE. Simply give us a call on 01525 643850 for an informal chat, or email us at sales@fortishire.co.uk for a no-obligation quote.
