What is a waste service tanker?

In the waste disposal industry, a waste tanker is the vehicle used to transport liquid waste. Consisting of a tank with a pump, waste service tankers are also referred to as vacuum tankers or vacuum pump trucks.

What waste service tankers are used for

Vacuum pump trucks are commonly used for waste removal and disposal in the toilet industry. A waste service tanker is used to empty any self-contained system which is not connected to a mains sewer system, and is therefore used to empty portable toilets, for cesspit emptying, and for septic tank cleaning. However, they are used in other environmental and industrial settings such as times of flooding when the emergency services will use them to remove sludge build up and excess water.

How a waste service tanker works

Using a vacuum system, with hoses and valves, air is removed from the holding tank to be emptied and a vacuum is created. Internal pressure is then equalised and waste is literally sucked up by the pipes into the tanker.

Liquid waste that is removed by a service tanker cannot be introduced into a public mains sewer system and must, by law, be disposed of correctly. As registered waste carriers with the Environment Agency, Fortis Hire is an upper tier licence holder, fully qualified for sewage waste disposal.
