What happens to the waste from portable toilets?

26 September 2022

Portable toilet units are a common site at events of all kinds, from family parties to large-scale public sporting events. But how are portable toilets emptied and what happens to the waste? We look at how portable toilet companies carry out liquid waste disposal.

Types of portable toilets

There are two types of portable toilet units, flushing toilets and vacuum toilets. Vacuum toilets have the same technology as an aircraft toilet which uses a vacuum suction to remove waste to a waste tank, while traditional flushing portable toilets use either water from a concealed water tank to flush the waste into a holding tank, or chemicals from the holding tank itself. At Fortis Hire, we offer flushing, luxury toilet units, standard flushing toilets, and luxury vacuum toilet pods. Our flushing toilet units have their own water supply and waste storage, allowing them to be installed without the need for connection to a mains water supply. Both types of toilet however are self-contained, with a holding tank; this means that waste does not go into the sewer system like a domestic toilet.

How are portable toilets emptied?

As portable toilets are not connected to a mains sewer network, once the waste storage tanks have reached full capacity, they need to be emptied by a professional and reputable company like Fortis Hire. The toilet units’ storage tanks are connected from an output hole to our vacuum pump truck via a sealed system to ensure maximum safety and the highest hygiene standards, and the waste is transferred using suction technology.

What happens to the waste from portable toilets?

Once the process is complete and the waste has been transferred from the holding tanks to the vacuum truck, we dispose of the liquid waste by transporting it to a specialist waste water treatment plant, for processing and safe disposal.

How to dispose of liquid waste

There are strict Environmental Agency Waste Regulations governing the disposal of portable toilet waste in the UK. These regulations exist to safeguard against the disposal of waste in areas or environments where it could cause ill health or environmental damage.
