What is a vacuum tanker?

05 December 2022

At Fortis Hire we service all our luxury toilet trailers thanks to our own fleet of vacuum tankers. But what are they and what else are they used for? Read on to learn all about them.

What is a vacuum tanker?

A vacuum tanker is also known as a vacuum pump truck or a waste service tanker. It consists of both a tank and a pump and is designed to transport liquid, solid and gaseous loads on the roads, safely and legally.

How does a vacuum tanker work?

The pump operates pneumatically, that is by the use of air pressure and vacuums, and sucks up the waste material from where it is being stored, into the tank of the truck, using hoses and valves. Once this process is complete, the tanker can transport the waste for disposal.

Waste tanker services

Vacuum tankers are used for a variety of purposes but because they can collect waste from underground, they are often used for emptying septic tanks and sewers. They are also used for the transportation of industrial liquid by-products, and animal waste, and they have a large role to play in the portable toilet industry, where they are used to empty the holding tanks of toilet units. Emergency services also use vacuum tankers when there have been spillages of potentially hazardous materials, and also in the aftermath of storms, to relieve flooding, for example in the basements of homes.

The benefits of using a vacuum tanker

When used in sewerage, a vacuum tanker removes not only the waste but also any residual build up like sludge from the system. This enables the sewer to work more efficiently with reduced risks of backups or flooding. In the portable toilet industry, the sealed tank allows potentially hazardous waste to be transported safely and within environmental agency guidelines.

Waste tanker services from Fortis Hire

As a luxury portable toilet hire business, we have our own fleet of vacuum tankers, including a 14,000 litre tanker. This enables us to offer a comprehensive portable toilet cleaning service to all our hire customers, whatever the duration of the hire period. Our fleet also comprises split compartment tankers and these enable us to replenish fresh water supplies to our toilet hire units.

As well as our toilet emptying service, which we also offer to other portable toilet hire companies, we have a wide range of other tanker services. These include cesspit emptying, liquid waste disposal, septic tank cleaning, waste tank emptying, and sewage waste disposal.

In the UK, there are strict regulations governing the disposal of liquid waste from a vacuum tanker and waste carrying companies must be registered with the Environment Agency. As a registered upper tier licence holder, Fortis Hire offers drainage tanker services you can trust.
