How to make your conference accessible and compliant

17 July 2023

With extensive experience in the corporate event sector, we give you our top tips to ensure your next conference is compliant and accessible to all.

In 2019/2020 the number of disabled people in the UK was just over 14 million and the proportion of working age adults with a disability was 19%. By 2021 Scope reported that those figures had risen to 16 million and 23% respectively. With the number of people working with a disability increasing, it is imperative that they can access work and career events such as conferences and indeed it has been unlawful since 1995 to discriminate against a person’s disability in respect to ‘employment, the provision of goods and services, education and transport.

How portable toilet hire can provide accessibility

There are many ways for conference organisers to ensure their event is accessible to all, including induction loop facilities for the deaf and assisted food service for wheelchair users, but portable toilet hire has a huge part to play too. As well as being able to access an event venue, conference delegates must be able to access any facilities within the venue. Where toilet facilities may be located remotely or in hard to reach areas, portable toilet hire can be situated more conveniently.

Accessible toilet hire from Fortis Hire

Our range of luxury toilet units includes a luxury disabled toilet and a high dependency unit, both of which are DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) compliant. Ramp access and extra wide doors benefit wheelchair users (and families with pushchairs or prams) while the spacious interiors give plenty of room for manoeuvrability.

Features of the luxury disabled toilet

The unit lowers to the floor reducing the ramp by 50% and there are handrails for safety. The interior of the unit is equipped with a heater, reduced height sink and mirror and all luxury consumables and eco-friendly paper products are provided. There is also a drop down baby changing table.

Features of the high dependency unit

The perfect way to meet the supported needs of disabled delegates with carers, the high dependency unit has a well-equipped interior with an adjustable height bed, hoist and screen. The unit its own supply of hot and cold running water plus sensor taps, grab rails and interior and exterior handrails.

For event coordinators working within budget constraints our standard portable toilet range includes a plastic disabled toilet. With a generous interior turning circle for wheelchairs and pushchairs, the DDA compliant unit has an extra wide doorway, roll-in ground level floor access, handrails plus a drop down baby changing station.

Hiring disabled facilities for your conference will avoid any litigation for non-compliance and will reflect on the organisers; offering accessible facilities ensures participation for all and promotes inclusion which shows audiences that you care about these important issues. It will also enable a wider audience to attend, allowing for a wider range of opinions and discussions.
