Disabled toilet hire – everything you need to know

03 December 2021

Are you managing a new project? Scouting for new outdoor set locations? Or hosting a public event? Do you need to ensure accessibility for all? Our guide to disabled portable toilet hire has everything you need to know.

The law and disabled toilets

The Disability Act (2010) made it a legal requirement that any attendees on a site (be they visiting or working) must have access to adequate facilities. Anyone who is responsible for the provision of facilities has to provide sanitation facilities as a basic human right which are accessible to all. The Equality Act (2010) sets out specifically that the disabled facilities offered must be to the same standard as those for non-disabled people in order for the event organisers to meet their legal obligations under the Act. The Act defines disability as ‘ having a physical or mental impairment that has a ‘substantial’ and ‘long-term’ negative effect on one’s ability to do normal daily activities.’

Features of disabled portable toilets

At Fortis Hire, we offer luxury disabled toilet units for hire, and plastic disabled toilets, with some or all of the following features:

Wide doors – our disabled toilet units have entrances that are wide enough to accommodate a standard width wheelchair. All doors open outwards.

Access – our plastic disabled toilet units have roll-in ground level floor access, while our luxury disabled toilet unit features a ramp that can be reduced by 50%.

Internal space – our units have sufficient space to allow a wheelchair user or a parent with a pushchair to move freely once inside the toilet.

Handrails – fixed handrails provide security and ease of movement.

Lowered sink and mirror – available in our luxury disabled units.

Baby changing facilities – available in all our disabled toilet units to allow parents of children who require personal care to deliver it in private and with dignity.

Consumables – all required toiletries are included in all the units.

Heating – our luxury units have heaters for colder conditions.

DDA Compliant – all our units comply with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) of 1995 which made it mandatory that all service providers take reasonable steps to provide disability access.
