Health and safety on building sites

22 February 2024

The guidelines surrounding health and safety on building sites are clear. Here, we show you how site toilet hire from Fortis Hire will keep your development compliant, and your workers happy.

In the UK, the Health and Safety Executive is the Government department that regulates all health and safety related matters in the workplace, be that in a commercial office environment or on a building site. At Fortis Hire, we recommend that anyone responsible for health and safety on building sites should refer to the HSE Guidelines and, in particular, The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015. The following is our summary of the information needed by facilities managers, project managers or site supervisors.

HSE Guidelines

  • Building sites must have toilets and washing facilities by law, but the number of toilets depends on the number of workers.
  • The minimum recommended ratio of toilets to workers is 1:7 for those working a 40-hour week, and these can be chemical or flushing toilets.
  • Men and women can use the same facilities as long as cubicles are lockable and separate from urinals.
  • There should also be ‘suitable and sufficient washing facilities, including showers if required by the nature of the work...’
  • Handwashing basins must be large enough to accommodate the washing of hands and arms to the elbows and hot and cold running water should be provided along with soap and paper towels.
  • Men and women can use the same wash basins.
  • Where showers are available, they must separate cubicles which are single occupancy and lockable.
  • Guidelines also make clear that all facilities must be kept in a ‘clean and orderly condition’.

Site toilet hire from Fortis Hire

Our standard toilet hire range includes individual plastic portable toilets, a 6-man plastic urinal, and portable hand wash stations, all of which are suitable for HSE compliance on construction sites, and are available for long-term hire.

Portable shower hire from Fortis Hire

Our portable shower hire will ensure complete compliance with HSE guidelines on any construction site. Where workers come into prolonged contact with potential irritants, having shower facilities at their disposal will allow them to shower before going home, and reduce their exposure to any harmful materials. Units are available as a 4-bay shower unit and a 6-bay shower unit and all feature individual, lockable shower cubicles. Our shower units do require a mains water supply but where none is available, we can provide an IBC (intermediate bulk container) with pump.

Maintaining your portable toilets

To help you to maintain toilets in a ‘clean and orderly condition’, we offer a comprehensive portable toilet cleaning service. We will send our vacuum pumps to your site where waste tanks will be emptied and sumps refilled. The units will be serviced on site, cleaned inside and out, and all consumables will be replenished. All our customers are also given full, 24-hour access to our highly skilled technicians, via a dedicated support helpline.
