Film locations – how to choose one

08 April 2024

When location managers and location scouts set about finding the perfect spot for their project, there are a host of considerations to take into account. Here, we explain how to choose the ideal location.

As spectators, we watch movies and TV programmes and become completely immersed in the world unfolding in front of our eyes. But how do location managers choose a location and what should they think about?

  • Know your script and understand the genre – your choice of location needs to suit the tone of the storyline and its setting, and it needs to be in keeping with the period of the piece.
  • Accessibility – can cast and crew get to the location easily and how easy will it be to transport equipment to and fro?
  • Technical practicalities – your equipment will need power and electrical hook ups and locations must be able to provide this or accommodate resources to enable it. Will camera crew be able to achieve the required angles and will the lighting department be able to create the shots needed?
  • Location fees, permits – filming in public areas requires permission from local authorities, particularly where there may be disruption to traffic and restricted access for residents or business owners.  Private land locations must have the permission of landowners and police should be made aware of the production team’s presence.
  • Facilities and resources – are there sufficient local resources? For example is there parking? And what about refreshment and toilet facilities? Productions of any size involve a lot of people – from performers to technical crews, make up artists, and hairdressers, the list goes on. Location managers need to ensure there are sufficient toilet facilities to cater for everyone, but where a location that ticks all the boxes has insufficient, luxury toilet hire can save the day.

Toilet hire for film and TV allows location managers to consider every location regardless of facilities. Knowing that honey wagon hire can bridge the gap by either providing facilities where there are none, or by complementing existing facilities so that they do not become overwhelmed, means that the ideal location doesn’t have to be ruled out. Honey wagon hire for the film industry has many benefits but it’s vital to choose a supplier with experience that knows what they are doing.

Types of honey wagon

Fresh flush toilet trailers – the most eco-friendly portable loo in today’s market, the fresh flush toilet unit is solar powered, and requires no electricity supply or generator. Our Fresh Flush 5 Bay toilet is chemical-free and will accommodate up to 300 people over an 8-hour period.

For shoots in public locations where permanent facilities may become overwhelmed by the influx of a production crew, or for locations where space is at a premium, the Luxury 1 Plus 1 toilet is ideal.  Our smallest unit comprises two individual cubicles on a single axle trailer and will easily accommodate up to 100 people.

By contrast, our largest unit, the Luxury 4 Plus 2 toilet is suitable for more remote locations where available space is not an issue. Comprising 4 ladies' toilets, 2 men’s toilets and 4 urinals, the unit will serve up to 450 people.

Accessible luxury toilet hire for location filming is essential – representation in the arts is only possible through inclusion and our range of disabled toilets allows location managers to be compliant. We offer a luxury portable disabled toilet, a luxury accessible toilet and shower, as well as a fully equipped, DDA compliant High dependency Unit.
